California’s starting point
Vehicle owners and drivers must meet California’s financial-responsibility requirements. Most people do that with automobile liability insurance. Liability coverage addresses bodily injury or property damage you cause to others, up to the purchased limits and subject to the contract. A required minimum is not a recommendation for every household. Discuss limits in relation to assets, income and the losses that could follow a serious collision.
The declarations should list the insureds, vehicles, drivers, policy dates, coverages, limits and deductibles. Review every name and vehicle. Tell the insurer about household drivers, newly licensed drivers, vehicle changes, garaging changes and material changes in use. An unlisted or excluded driver can create a serious problem; read the policy before giving someone permission to drive.
Keep third-party and vehicle coverage separate
Bodily-injury and property-damage liability protect against covered claims by others; they do not repair your own vehicle. Collision usually addresses damage to your vehicle from impact, while comprehensive commonly addresses specified non-collision events such as theft, vandalism or fire. Both are subject to deductibles and contract terms. A lender or lessor may require physical-damage coverage even though the state’s financial-responsibility rule focuses on liability.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage concerns losses caused by a driver with no insurance or insufficient insurance. California insurers must offer it, and a buyer may be able to reject it in writing. Medical payments, rental reimbursement, towing and road service are separate choices. Ask what triggers each coverage, its limit, and whether it duplicates another benefit you already have.
Build an apples-to-apples quotation
Use the same liability limits, uninsured-motorist limits, physical-damage deductibles and optional coverages for each quotation. Confirm annual mileage, principal use, garaging ZIP and driver information. Discounts vary and may have conditions; ask what facts produced each one. A lower premium may reflect lower limits, higher deductibles or omitted coverage rather than a better price for the same contract.
Do not send driver’s-license numbers, vehicle-identification numbers or payment data through this site. Begin with driver and vehicle counts and provide sensitive details later only through a method the agency authorizes.
Review optional protections by function
Optional auto protections answer different questions and should not be treated as one package. Medical payments may address certain medical expenses without deciding fault, subject to the form. Rental reimbursement can help with a temporary vehicle only after a qualifying covered loss and within its stated limits. Towing or roadside coverage has its own eligible services and conditions. Coverage for permanently installed equipment, custom parts, rideshare activity or a vehicle used for delivery may require special attention. Ask what is included, what is excluded and what documentation would be needed after a loss.
Ownership and use must remain accurate. A financed or leased vehicle may have physical-damage requirements, but satisfying the lender does not select liability limits or every optional protection. Household residents, youthful drivers, students away from home, business use and vehicle location can affect underwriting. Report changes through the insurer’s approved channel and retain confirmation. Before accepting a replacement-cost, new-car or loan-balance option, read its age, mileage, ownership and loss conditions rather than relying on the label.
